My grandmother made those kinds of bindings by folding the backing over to the front. I fixed one that had that just by putting a standard binding (2.5 in., folded in half and stitched on in the usual way) right over the top of the old binding, in a similar fabric.

That is a beautiful, beautiful quilt!Paulettehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06181665241824945247noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5824554059843705380.post-18182003499033042292010-03-30T19:48:45.656-07:002010-03-30T19:48:45.656-07:00I share your puzzlement. But I don't want someone 50 years from now finding one of my quilts and putting it in deep freeze rather than enjoying it. I suspect your great aunt made the quilt to be used. She wanted your grandmother to think of her when she snuggled under it at night. Do repair the damage, perhaps using vintage fabric if you can find some to match (there are many online sources for fabric from past decades). And use it gently. Make many photos. And on the day when the quilt has been loved to pieces, try to preserve one star -- framed under glass and saved as testament to the woman who made those tiny stitches and her sister, who saved the quilt to thrill another generation.Sunny -- aka Matriarchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12343919025257403465noreply@blogger.com
