Favorite Things Friday--Organization

An organized room.

Organization is a vastly under-appreciated state of being--until you don't have it.  I've recently discovered that organization is one of my very most favorite things.

Today, my room is finally organized (okay there are a couple of little things on the dresser that you can't see that still needs some attention, but it's mostly good).  I've discovered the clutter in my house is directly proportional to the clutter in my brain.  The more items that have been put in their proper place, the more space I have in my brain.

Organization saves time--no more searching for things.  Organization saves energy--no more searching for things.  Organization improves mood--no more frustration while searching for things.  (I bet you're beginning to see a trend here, eh?)  Organization feels successful.  It will be a long time before I take it for granted again.

  1. I promising myself to get organised but it never happens! Your right though, there is a direct relationship with being organised and brain clutter.

  2. You know you're dead right! I'm going to get my act together and get organised. I've been letting things slide and I don't like it at all.

  3. I agree with you. The more things are in place, the better your mood. But I have long had the problem, that I start out so good with being organized, and then one day, I just can't keep it up and it goes down hill from there. How do you suggets we all keep being organized?

  4. You are 100%-without-a-doubt-no-denying-it RIGHT! I can't think when I'm engulfed in clutter. Fabulous favourite! I think it's one of mine too. Glad your clutter is disappearing fast...that means more sewing/quilting time, right? :o) Happy FTF! Larri

  5. Organization is a wonderful thing, I can't work well if things are all confused and such. Unfortunately I live with two people who seem to thrive on the chaos. So my sewing room is very organized and if I need relief I hide in there! Thanks for sharing.

  6. Organization is wonderful. It has been so longed since I've decluttered and organized. Maybe that's half my problem. (We won't talk about the other half of my problem...the meds take care of that.) :)

  7. I guess I'm the odd man out - I can survive with clutter in my everyday life, but not where I work - and that's when I knew that quilting had changed from being a hobby to being a vocation - when I started going crazy if my sewing area was cluttered!! Your room looks wonderful and I love that quilt!!

  8. I have to be organized to feel happy I think. Do you have a separate room to use as a sewing space or is the house not big enough for that. If I remember right you are sharing a house with you mom and her parents (your grandparents)?

  9. I was walking around the outside of plant with some co-workers yesterday for our twice-daily exercise regime, and they had a hard time keeping up with me - they're both fast walkers and I'm usually the one lagging behind - and they asked, "Why are you walking so fast?" I replied that I wasn't walking, I was marching. They asked me to define the difference.

Marching is, with the guidance of cadence, knowing exactly where your next step is going to land, the distance of the step, and perhaps most importantly the timing of those steps for a repeatable metric. I wasn't chatting or talking - both detractors - and my eyes and head were forward, my hands curled as if at "Attention" as they swayed in metronomic meter by my side. It is, to me, the pinnacle of efficiency.

When everything surrounding you is used for a singular purpose, there are no wasted movements. And even small wasted movements, over time (in this case a 45-minute walk) can add up significantly.

In reading your entry, surely organization can be viewed similarly - everything pointing toward efficiency; no wasted movements. And that can be both powering AND calming.

  10. You're so right. I started cleaning and "re"organizing yesterday, it needs a daily lift at times.

  12. Don't come to my house, you might have an attack of some kind. Organisation for me is mostly in my head.

  13. I agree with you totally, organization is a great thing. However thinking it and doing it are two totally different things, and I may think organization is great but I am rarely if ever organized.

  14. You are absolutely right about having more space in your brain when things are organized!!

  15. I couldn't agree more. I can deal with a bit of disorganization, but too much and I've got to put things right or it messes with my overall mood. I was quite happy that I could find a needle-nosed pliers in the dark last evening when Dan was replacing the switches and had shut off the breaker to both the workshop and my sewing room. It might not look organized, but I knew where to put my hand, and it was there!

  16. You're a girl after my own heart Ms. Michelle. I love being organised and get really really freaked out when I'm not.

Love that your room is a peaceful haven, and that quilt is so pretty!

  17. Awesome! I am glad everything is well with you. That is a pretty quilt as usual. I was so happy when my all my boxes were emptied and stuff put away in their new home. BTW I like the clocks in the kitchen. :)

  19. I am hearing you loud and clear!!!! I have all of my house organised except the blanket box in the bedroom....still trying to move out some furniture to make room for my crafty projects :-)

I think of it as a work in progress, slow and steady and i will get there!

  20. You are right on. Maybe I will make this a 2011 goal.

  21. Oh Michelle! You are soooooooo right! and I need help in that department. I thrive on organization: everything has a place and everything in its place...
But how easily the chaos returns... And I immediately react by having clutter jitters... Fancy coming over and lending a hand? And then we could quilt! :)
