Favorite Things Friday--Kiss Noir

Honestly, I'm not a big fan of vampire fiction.  You won't find me reading the Twilight Series.  I even missed Anne Rice's highly acclaimed Interview with a Vampire (although after Kiss Noir I am considering remedying that situation).   That said, I am a fan of good fiction no matter what guise it takes.  So for Favorite Things Friday, I give you Kiss Noir

Robynn Clairday is an excellent and eclectic writer.  In the past, she has written more for the young adult audience, having two non-fiction books published with Scholastic, Tell Me This Isn't Happening and Expect the Unexpected.  Then later, the young adult fiction novel, Confessions of a Boyfriend Stealer with Delacorte.

I became acquainted with Robynn's work when she contacted my mother, who was then teaching 4th grade, about working with her on the Tell Me This Isn't Happening project--actual embarrassing moments submitted by children.  The collaboration was very successful.  Robynn got great material for the book, and my mom was handed a wonderful teaching opportunity.  The first book was so successful, that Expect the Unexpected was born, and my mom and her class (the following year) again collaborated with Robynn.

Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found that Robynn's first foray into adult fiction, Kiss Noir, had been published.  Kiss Noir is steamily romantic, scary, and nerve-wrackingly thrilling.  Right now, the book is available as an e-book from BookStrand Publishing, but I've been hearing that it will be available in hard copy on down the line.

So what is your favorite thing this Friday?  Head on over to Quilting in My Pyjamas and join in the fun!

  1. That is so wonderful that your mom was part of such a great project!
I too thought I'd never have anything to do with the 'vampire' thing....then the kids talked me into watching the first Twilight movie with them.

  2. You'll have to let us know when it is a hard copy. As much as I embrace tech I like my books physical!
I did the whole Anne Rice thing and other vampires like the Sookie Stackhouse books but the Twilight ones bore me a bit and the last book is very odd!
On of my cousins writes childrens books and the first series of those was about vampires so I can't really get away from them. His are more boy books though some girls love them as well.

  3. How wonderful that your mom and Robynn collaborated on those projects. I am embracing the electronic book for holiday reading. I downloaded 4 books to take away with me to read on my last holiday, so much lighter and easier than carting lots of books with me. It also means I have more room for my trillion cookbooks in my bookcase. I don't think I will ever change to downloaded books for craft and recipes though, I love to be able to flip through the pages.
(If I read a book on my iPad I don't need to wear glasses, and that's a huge bonus.)

  4. Isnt it wonderful when you pick up a book you wouldnt normally read and enjoy it so much? I love being surprised that way.

Must admit I dont do vampires because I'm scared of them....

And how cool for your Mom to be involved in such a terrific collaboration.

  5. That's neat you have a personal connection to the author! I'm glad you found it to be such a good read, considering you weren't that into vampires before. It says a lot about the quality of the writing. Happy FTF!

  6. While living in Saint Louis, we were introduced to the local writer Laurel K. Hamilton's "vampire fiction" books and enjoyed them immensely. Somewhere along the way however, she started writing porn. Bad porn. That's when we stopped reading her. Like you, I cringe when someone states they "don't do" a particular genre. I weep at the increased chance of missing something great due to irrational limitations. Genre is simply a setting for the story.

What's my favorite thing this Friday? Well, I have to be honest - this is. Knowing that there will be a "Prairie Quilter" entry. Monday's and Friday's are my two new favorite online days :)

  8. I am not a fan of vampire fiction either (lol). I know, that is a huge contradiction considering my slight fascination with Twilight. I have a few questions for you on this book. I'll ask in an e-mail.

Also, HOW COOL is that that your mom got to collaborate on two books! I'm going to see if I can find those and read them with my kids -- they are 3rd and 5th grade this year and based on what you said, those books sound like they would be fun for us.

  10. Looks like a great book. And I'm also not into the Vampire thing but my 27 year old, an avid reader, is really into them. I'll have to point this one out to her.
